And a Happy New Year!

When you're a singer, it feels funny at first, but pretty soon you eliminate the offending consonants automatically. The director is pleased. Unfortunately, consonant-elimination is not universally practiced. Consider the traditional Christmas ditty, We Wish You a Merry Christmas. Figgy pudding notwithstanding, here's what it sounds like to a carefully trained chorister's ear:

SHHHHH HISS-HISS,

SHHHHH HISS-HISS,

SHHHHH HISS-HISS,

And a happy new year!

When caroling begins next year and your now-enlightened ears do hear what I hear--and hear it they will--think fondly of me.
